Evil Riffs #1: Grindcore

Welcome to Evil Riffs #1, my idea for this series is to share some of my favourite riffs from all genre variations. So I thought I'd begin not at the beginning - as would probably make sense - but with those short, intense, rotten, piggish, napalm-covered, nuggets of explosive GRIND! We all need a bit of grind in our lives, and here are some of the best:

ROTTEN SOUND - SALVATION

Ten thousand chainsaws road, sledgehammers pummel flesh, jackhammers jack ham? This is a minute and half of two halves: the first a chaotic wall-of-noise, almost unlistenable track of mutated drum-blasts the second half a fierce massacre, just a massive riff brain rattling chainsaw riff.

PIG DESTROYER - TROJAN WHORE

My favourite song off one of the most intense, twisted, maniacal and genuinely evil albums I've listened to. The lyrics are freaky, the vocals are desperately hopeless and the guitar tone is just ummmph; this song epitomises Pig Destroyer's sound: groove, grind and grimness (that was cheesy). The transition into the riff at 0.42 never fails to warm my black, withered heart.

NASUM - WRATH

144p's worth of grind here for you. Nasum were Swedish grindcore goliaths and despite rather cheesy lyrics and a video that'll give you cataracts, you'll never feel like a puppet on a string after this one. Guitar's have the typical Swedish chainsaw sound that one can never tire of...unless you're In Flames.

NAPALM DEATH - INSTINCT OF SURVIVAL (LIVE AT THE BBC)

This is a version live from the studio of legendary BBC radio D.J John Peel. I'd highly recommend this album to everyone under the cold sun; it's three and a half hours of grind from some of the UK's heaviest bands: Bolt Thrower, Extreme Noise Terror, Carcass, Godflesh, Heresy. Instinct of Survival on this album is somehow more dirty and heavy.

NUNSLAUGHTER - ANGELIC DREAD

Blackened Death-Grind? Has genre pigeon-holing gone to far? Won't they think of the children!? Either way this is the perfect opening track to an album. No nonsense violence here that makes the angels cry with an angelic dread. Drummer Jim Sadist passed away in September of 2015, so air-drum as you listen to this one.

BRUTAL TRUTH - ILL NEGLECT

This is a video I didn't know existed. I'm not too sure why the video is set at the same construction site that was in the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers Movie of the late 90s (Ivan Ooze anyone?), maybe Brutal Truth were fans. Either way this is an excellent song from an early 90s grind classic.

So next week I was thinking of moving on to Grind's more eccentric, obscene, politically motivated and socially active older brother: Crust!
