I haven't done much deep-web trawling of new and upcoming releases for quite a while, so I dedicated some time to scouring Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Twitter, Facebook and all other bastions of extreme metal to present some interesting new and upcoming releases.

What toxic chemical has been secretly drained into the Spanish waters producing such dense death-metal? . Like Wormed, Altarage are a gargantuan and oppressively-heavy: it's planets colliding, incessant pounding, monsters emerging dripping acid from the deeps. Similar in ways to earlier Portal. An assault on the ears. Nihil, their debut full-length, is released on the 26th of February. Solacide

The Finish Line is the upcoming second album by Finnish band Solacide, set for release on the 28th of Februray. Their sound is a sort of progressive-melodic-tech adorned black-metal with equal moments of brutal intensity and melancholic melody.  There's a good mix of styles here that interplay nicely. Mixed with clean vocals too that initially brough to mind an Enslaved/Borknagar/Strapping Young Lad hybrid. There are interesting guitar lines and moments crammed in to the record. Krater

Krater have a blackened-death sound, mixing heaviness with sudden ambient and choral layerings. It's a really interesting and well-done sound. Riffs are not overly complex yet they maintain a viciousness and an intensity that some bands neglect. Urere is the German bands third full-length, scheduled for release on the 26th.

Really nice abrasive and  riff-based black-metal from Belgium. Good riffs, evil vocals and evil atmosphere - what more could you want from black-metal? No pretense, no showing off, it's the music and nothing else. Their upcoming 3 track EP contains two original songs and a cover of Mayhem's 'Pagan Fears'. Worth playing loud if you want to frighten off vvimps.

Grit.  Gritty production for in-your-face death-metal: riffs galore, churning sound. mud and flame and lightening and guns and blasts and death...everywhere. Begrime Exemious's sound is a monstrous and grotesque thrashy-death. The Canadian bands third album is scheduled for release on the 4th of March.

Carnosus - The Universal Culmination EP (2016)

Swedish death metal, produced by Tomas Skogsberg and recorded at the famous Sunlight Studio: did the production for Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Nirvana 2002; this has got that classic buzzsaw sound ripping production we all expect from Swedish death. More technical and frenetic than Entombed and Dismember. Mid-pace grooves and sweeping melodies aplenty; deep gutterals and higher-pitched black metal rasps are in constant conflict. Four short and sweet songs. The technical eccentricty of Pestilence meets the energy and intensity of early Death. The more I listen to this E.P the more I notice, it's both melodic and intense and the riffs really are incredible, very mature for a young band.

Suspiral - Delve into the Mysteries of Transcendence (11th of March)

Suspiral are a two piece black-metal outfit from Spain. They've only released the one track, 'Poisonous Essence', from their upcoming E.P. It's a 12-minute journey into the spiritual dimensions that exist before death. They're signed to I, Voidhanger and they usually have a great selection of eccentric and interesting bands. This band are one of those: they seem a dirtier, more pessimistic and more human spin-off of Spectral Lore, and that's a great thing. The song travels from swirling cacophonies of noise to sweeping, grand solos, from slow mutated feedback heavy doom-riffs to uncompromising black-thrash aggression; vocals fade into the back of the mix, echo through the poisonous dimensions, engulfed by an atmospheric abyss.

Harsh and oppressive ritualistic swamp sludge from the waterlogged misty plains of . . . Alaska. Valtiel are monstrously heavy. Thou meets Electric Wizard. Three tracks spanning 22-minutes of stoner-doom grooves, harsh, pained shrieks and a swampy suffocating atmosphere.

Skyless Aeons - The Era of Famine (2016)

This debut EP by Skyless Aeons is monstrous. 35-minutes and four sweeping songs worth of intense songs blackened-death: riffs aplenty, interesting transitions, and solos smothered by a lead-heavy old-school sounding production. The vocals are inhuman and loud in the mix fluctuating from mid-to-high range shrieks similar to Anaal Nathrakh to mid-range growls. There are moments of real technical efficiency - think Gorguts and Mithras - along with an atmospheric undertone akin to Ulcerate and Flourishing. I highly recommend.

Rorschach - 2016 Demo

Named after the anti-hero of Alan Moore's Watchmen, Rorschach, from the Netherlands, play a dark and ominous post-metal that wouldn't sound out of place as a soundtrack to Alan Moore's seedy, violent and dark graphic novels. With voice-samples from Carl Sagan and Alan Watts and titles such as 'The Pale Blue Dot' and 'Mind of Man' Rorschach dwell in an existential nightmare, a nihilistic cosmic existence void of purpose and meaning . They remind me of early Isis and German sludge metal band Omega Massif with their ability to mix atmosphere with solid riffage.

Old Man of the Desert - Reversal (2016)

A one-man instrumental metal project from Russia, Reversal by Old Man Of The Desert is a melancholic mix of post-rock and black metal. Introspective shoegaze elements mix with a heaviness similar to Heretoir and  Lantlos while structures and soundscapes give off a Russian Circles vibe.
